Parents’ Resources: Understanding Speech and Language Development

Every child develops in their own way, and some take a little longer to find their words. But if you’ve noticed your child struggling to follow instructions, find the right words, or having trouble with their phonological development or being intelligible – and you can’t stop thinking about it – you’re not overreacting, and you’re not alone. Speech and language difficulties are one of the most common, and most misunderstood, developmental challenges children face, affecting how they learn, connect with others, and experience the world around them.

Language skills affect far more than a child’s ability to talk. They support learning, reading and writing, following classroom instructions, building friendships, expressing needs and ideas, and participating in everyday life. When a child is having ongoing difficulty in these areas, recognising the signs early and seeking appropriate advice can help families understand what is happening and what support may be useful. Knowing what to look for is an important first step.

Mancel College is proud to support parents at every step of their journey. From understanding their child’s symptoms to setting them up on a brighter future, and allowing them to achieve their full potential. We offer a range of resources for parents, including our Understanding Speech and Language Development flyer, which walks you through key milestones, common signs to look out for, and practical next steps.
