Belong – March 2024
Mark Yeowell – CEO
As we finish term one for the year, I would like to take this opportunity to say an enormous thank you to all our College families for your ongoing support and partnership with us in the education of your children. I have had the privilege of showing a number of visitors around the College. Without fail, our visitors comment on how impressive our students are and how calm and focused our classrooms are. Our staff do an amazing job of supporting students through the rough and the smooth of school life, the journey of growing up and navigating the everyday challenges of getting along with others as part of a community.
I wish you and your family a happy and relaxing school holiday break. I look forward to seeing everyone back for the start of Term 2 on Monday, 15 April.
Peter Foster – Principal
I’m thrilled to introduce Nici Morey, our new Curriculum Coordinator, to our community. Nici will be overseeing curriculum and pedagogy from prep to year 12, focusing on scope and sequencing.
As we move into Term Two, we’re excited to announce the opening of our top-floor aquatic centre. Our programs will commence gradually, with small groups learning swimming techniques and stroke correction under the guidance of Craig Tobin, our new Swimming Director.
Our design and technology room is also set to open. We kindly ask all parents to sign permission forms so their children can attend these lessons. Additionally, students must wear appropriate footwear—covered shoes made of either leather or hard vinyl.
Another exciting update is the launch of our new app, Tass Orbit. Instructions for downloading the app have been emailed to you. We’ll also be hosting tutorials during the first week of Term Two to assist with app usage.
Wishing you all a fantastic Easter and holiday break and looking forward to welcoming you back for Term Two on 15 April.
Colour Run is back again and promises to be a happy day filled with colour, smiles, laughter and silly fun!! The inflatable is booked, the course is set, and the sausages are ordered! Thursday, 28 March, on the Mancel College school grounds.
Wear a white T-shirt and old clothes (including sneakers) and don’t forget a towel or change of clothes for the car ride home!
Parents are more than welcome to come watch (even join in!); Victoria emailed a schedule last weekend. Once you and your child have finished the course and had some lunch, you are welcome to head home to enjoy your Easter holidays!
See you there!!
Amy Francesca and Tom Reynolds – Allied Health
Across term 1, the allied health team has been busy completing screeners in a range of areas to find our students’ strengths and plan interventions for term 2. In particular, they have collected lots of useful information about our students’ current literacy skills so they can target literacy lessons to meet learning needs across the school.
But that’s not all! We have more exciting news from the Allied Health team. Our speech pathologist, Tom, completed training to become a Lego Therapist. He is excited to put this into practice across the school and create opportunities for students to develop their language, social skills, play skills, fine motor skills and more through this program. He plans to launch this in term 2—more information to follow.
It certainly has been a busy term in the Pathways and Partnerships space. At the end of February, we saw our first Careers and Transition Event for the year. External providers were invited to deliver presentations about the services they offer to students and parents of Senior School Students across the evening. The Certificate I Hospitality Students provided catering for the event, and everyone had a good night.
Term 2 will see the commencement of SET planning meetings for the upper senior students. Meetings with the year 12 students and their parents will commence first for discussions around post-schooling pathways. I will then move onto the year 10 and 11 students. I will contact parents about booking these discussions early in Term 2.
Early March saw the opening of our Mini Woolies Facility. Mancel College is the first school in Queensland to have a facility like this. This space will be utilised across all year levels of the school to complement and support numeracy and literacy lessons as well as enhance communication and interpersonal skills. The launch was a great success, with our student leaders assisting representatives from Woolworths, Mancel College, and our parent community to shop within this simulated workspace.
